Dr. Hariharan Is presently a consultant in shipping management and training. he has over 60 years of experience in the shipping and transport fields. Having worked In a leading shipping agency company for some years, he joined the 5cindia Steam Navigation Co. Ltd., In 1965 and served in many responsible positions, and retired in 1988.

He obtained a Ph.D. degree from Mumbai University In 1964 for his pioneering research work on the earliest phase of ancient Indian Shipping, he is an ardent researcher and has to his credit 13 books and over 60 research papers/articles on shipping and allied subjects. Among his well-known books is Commercial Shipping Management: Basic Aspects; A Text-book on Container and Multimodal Transport Management; Container, Multimodal Transport, and Infrastructure development in India (5th edition); Logistics and Shipping Management in Maritime Trade, Laws of Carriage of Goods by Sea and Multimodal Transport; Commercial and Legal Aspects of Shipping Documents.

He was the national coordinator of shipping for the TRAINMAR Project (Training Development in the field of Maritime Transport) of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development, from 1980-to 1988. he also served as a Director of the Container Corporation of India for three years —1996-to 1998.
